LEGACY

PORTISHEAD RADIO - THE LEGACY

When the station closed on 30th April 2000, it was originally planned to commemorate the role of the station by a memorial and plaque.

Unfortunately, these plans never materialised, and for the last 25 years, former staff have campaigned to have the site of the station recognised with a plaque and information board recalling the history of the station.

Due to an ongoing dispute between the site developers and the County Council, we are unable to erect the plaque and information board on the former radio station site until the issues regarding the site boundaries have been mutually agreed.

Staff have been lobbying the Local and County Councils and Member of Parliament in order to rectify this situation, and it is hoped that something will be in place shortly.

The Memorial Plaque.

Thanks to the generosity of the Radio Officers' Association (ROA), the plaque will be provided by them as soon as a site has been agreed.

An illustration of the proposed wording is shown on the right.

It is planned that the plaque will be mounted on a rock located at the entrance to Mulholland Park.

The Information Board

It is proposed that an information board, outlining the history of the station, will be erected adjacent to the memorial plaque.

The board shown on the left is located at Portishead, close to the Marina, and commemorates the Portishead transmitting station,

It is planned that the board at Highbridge will be of a similar design.
